About Holmby Hills
Holmby Hills is an affluent neighborhood in west Los Angeles, California.
Situated between Beverly Hills and Bel Air, these three areas form Los Angeles' "Platinum Triangle." And while Holmby Hills may not be the most notable of the three, the 2000 Census found that the estate section of Holmby Hills is the highest income neighborhood in the United States with an average income of $780,925.
Bordered by Wilshire Boulevard on the south and Westwood on the west, Sunset Boulevard divides Holmby Hills into north and south sections.
With its panoramic views and opulent homes, Holmby Hills is home to many top-level entertainment industry executives, such as Walt Disney, television producer Aaron Spelling, music legend Michael Jackson, and Playboy publisher and founder Hugh Hefner (whose Holmby Hills home is better known as the Playboy Mansion) currently reside or have previously resided in the area.
The area of present day Holmby Hills was the native land of the Tongva-GabrieliƱo Americans, who it is believed lived in this area for over 8,000 years.
The first European settler on the land, that present day Holmby Hills, Bel Air, Westwood, and UCLA now exist, was a Spanish soldier by the name of Maximo Alanis. Alanis was awarded the land by Alta California Governor Manuel Micheltorena in the year 1843.
One of the first mansions built in the area during the latter part of the 1920s was a Tudor-style home of the founder's son, Arthur Letts, Jr., now the Playboy Mansion.
Famous Americans such as Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Jean Harlow, Lana Turner, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Gary Cooper, Barbra Streisand, Irene Dunne, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Jack Benny, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis Jr., Sonny & Cher, Nat King Cole, and Marilyn Monroe all made Holmby Hills their home at one time or another.
